  THOSE DARNED RABBITS!!
The Eastern cottontail rabbit is probably second only to deer in the number of animal control questions we receive at Four Seasons. At the bottom is a link to a great article from Missouri Botanical Garden on managing this difficult and fast-multiplying critter. The article includes lists of plants that they prefer to nibble and those that they avoid. http://www.mobot.org/gardeninghelp/plantfinder/IPM.asp?code=101&group=2&level=s.

  LAWN TIME
Many of our lawns have had a tough and very unusual summer. Before undertaking any major renovations it would be wise to check on these 7 Easy Steps from Purdue. Unless you are fanatic about your lawn it doesn't have to be perfect; but remember that a nice lawn enhances the value of your home as well as setting off your gardens and providing a place for family and friends to enjoy themselves outside. And, healthy, dense turf has fewer weed problems than a sparse, thin lawn. We carry everything you need for the lawn including high-quality grass seed, blue grass sod, Ferti-Lome fertilizers and weed control products - both liquid and granular (you can use our spreader at no charge when you buy the product from us), insecticides, and fungicides. If you prefer the all-natural non-chemical fertilizers, we offer Natural Guard Corn Gluten Fertilizer, and Milorganite. You can also arrange for an on-site consultation for professional advice on lawn improvement and weed control.

PRUNING - Don't Do It Now
While many of us tend to put off pruning because we aren't quite sure of how or what to prune, we can tell you something about when to prune: NOT NOW. New vegetative growth, initiated by pruning branch tips, takes several weeks to begin growing. This new vegetative growth then must elongate and mature or it will not survive winter's cold temperatures. After mid-August pruning should be postponed until after mid to late October when plants are going dormant. Did you know: If you purchase Felco pruners from us you can bring them in for free sharpening whenever they need it.

  HORSETAIL
No, this isn't a story about Trigger, Diablo, Silver, or even Mr. Ed. Horsetail is the common name for a pernicious weed, Equisetum. Here is one "hard to conquer" weed, and it has survived for centuries. You can't get rid of it by pulling; Glyphosate (Round-Up) does not kill it; and most other herbicides lack whatever it takes to win the battle with Horsetail. However, we have tested "SedgeHammer" and found that it will, indeed, do an effective job of controlling Horsetail. Label rate is 1.8 gm. of SedgeHammer per 1000 sq. ft., and the label recommends adding Spreader Sticker to the spray solution. If you have a Horsetail problem, you now have a new weapon to use: SedgeHammer. It is available in our garden center.
